EAST tour and SOL open house

Make plans either this weekend or next to take part in EAST, the annual East Austin Studio Tour. Artists and craftsmen all over Austin's east side open their studios to the public, galleries have special events and parties and even architects and builders host open houses. It's truly a great showcase of what talent lies in the wonderfully funky east side of the city.

Threshold is teaming up with two of our wonderful furniture designers we represent in our showroom as part of EAST. First, the talented Michael Yates is teaming up with three other artists for a group show at the amazing Dragonfly House. We're going to add a few small furniture pieces and accessories to accentuate Michael's beautiful work.

Our other collaboration for EAST is with our favorite vintage furniture makeover guru Veronica Koltuniak of Verokolt. As part of the tour she decorated (using pieces from Threshold) one of the homes at the highly-anticipated Sol, the newest development by KRDB. Chris Krager's team is the incredible design/build firm that pioneered the trend in affordable, green, modern living in Austin. Come by the open house during the tour to see what all the buzz is about. Come for the architecture, stay to see our incredible furniture!

Our beloved "Thunder", the Horse Lamp from Moooi, has found a new home in a downtown Austin condo where he can stare out the window and enjoy the view all day.....we miss him but know he will be well loved.

"Arnold", our Pig Table from Moooi, misses him as well, but would love to find a new home too. Wouldn't you love to wake up every morning to see his cute little face??

Photos from the ACL Afterfest at the Seaholm Power Plant

I just wanted to share some photos of the ACL Afterfest at the Seaholm Power Plant. The turnout was incredible, and one party-goer even said the event was "epic".

These pictures were taken before the crowds arrived. An event company provided the sofas and we placed our colorful outdoor chairs and such to add a little vibrance.

It is amazing what a little color and texture can do....especially in a cool industrial space.

Amazing ACL Afterfest at the Seaholm Power Plant

There is a show tomorrow night after the first night of ACL Festival that you DEFINITELY don't want to miss. Broken Social Scene, Generationals and Corto Maltese are playing at the Seaholm Power Plant, one of Austin's most iconic landmarks....and it's the first time that an event of this caliber is held in this space.

They are dropping off wristbands today at various locations but only 4,000 will be able to get in to the show, which starts at 10pm. For more details check out the website. Sounds like a pretty perfect way to kick-off the festival weekend.

Oh and Threshold is getting in on the action....we're offering up our unique brand of cool in the form of furniture for the VIP room...enjoy!

One Sofa, Multiple Possibilities

We recently received a fantastic sectional from Moroso called the Highland. The pieces are modular and can be placed in many different configurations. This is seriously one of the most amazingly comfortable sofas i have ever sat on. One thing that creates this comfort is the extendable headrests.

This is how we placed it when we first received it....stretching it out long to create a large seating area:

A few weeks later we did a little showroom shuffling around and wanted to relocate the sectional to a much smaller area in the front corner facing the intersection of 5th and West. The same pieces fit into a much smaller footprint, and creates a much more intimate seating area. This is now officially my favorite place in the showroom:

Mueller Parade of Homes

Threshold teamed up with the geniuses at Michael Hsu Design Office and the Muskin Company to furnish a home for the 2009 Parade of Homes at Mueller. The mid-century inspired design was perfect for us, and we decorated and accessorized in a way that truly makes the architecture shine....supporting it, not covering it. The home feels like it belongs to a hip family that loves architecture, art and amazing design.

We'd love to thank Michael and Kevin from Michael Hsu Design Office, Alan Muskin from The Muskin Company, Wally from the Wally Workman Gallery, Lauren from LD Design, Kristi from Wee, Brent from Vioski, Michael Yates, Rene Norman and everyone else that made the home a success.

Event Information For Saturday Night!

Here is a little more in-depth information about our opening and artist's reception Saturday night. Come join us...it should be pretty incredible!

A Dialogue – Three Generations, Three Explorations
Vincent Mariani, Roi James, Andrew Anderson
Gallery Threshold, 801 W 5th #101, Austin, TX
Opening: May 9, 7-9 pm, open through June 9

Vincent Mariani, Roi James and Andrew Anderson speak the language of color through painting in A Dialogue: Three Generations, Three Explorations, an exhibition at Gallery Threshold, Austin, Texas. Influenced by color field painters and abstractionists these artists all experiment with color through basic geometric forms, yet each maintains a unique process for creating harmony, vision and expression in his paintings. Although the artists range in age from 31 to 82 this exhibition reveals a point where their artistic paradigms converge. Each painter has experienced a similar journey studying and exploring the possibilities of color.
Exhibiting work primarily from the 1970s, Mariani’s color-form compositions show a clear homage to his former teacher, famed abstractionist Josef Albers. Formal elements like balance and rhythm drive paintings that explore the interplay of color and light. While the study of color has been of interest to artists throughout history, Mariani’s simply formed abstractions give an intense focus to the interaction of colors. James and Anderson carry on that tradition – the artist’s timeless captivation with color, light, and hue – to create works that are ultimately about transcendence, harmony and order. Mariani, James and Anderson have found a kinship in their study of color and share a precise technique that leads the viewer into the beautiful, complex and meditative world of pure color.

About the Artists:
Andrew Anderson, 31, was born in Mexico City. At the age of 16, a visit to the Rothko Chapel in Houston inspired him to begin his work with minimalist abstraction through color. After completing his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Texas, Anderson has continued to work in a reductive style that highlights the harmony, depth and intuitive complexity of color.

Roi James, 47, has been exploring the formal elements of art through his Constructs series. By reducing his compositions to their most simple forms, James is able to create harmony and serenity from elements that are often disparate and chaotic. A prolific painter, his ethereal portraits, sublime landscapes and refined abstractions are displayed in many prominent collections throughout Texas and the United States.

Vincent Mariani, 82, studied under famed abstractionist Josef Albers. Mariani’s paintings from the 70s use a precise technique, simple forms and color to create unique and unpredictable compositions. As a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, Mariani began working with holographic sculpture, sustaining his fascination with the endless possibilities of light and color.

Gallery Threshold....And New Events

As part of our grand opening we unveiled the (unfortunately temporary) 'Gallery Threshold'. This space has a perfect gallery feel and is located across the street in the ground floor of the Austin City Lofts. The amazing Michael Merck showed works along with orignal and wonderfully funky pieces from Verokolt. We think their works are absolutely perfect together.

And speaking of Michael, he will be giving a talk about his work and process at the Gallery Threshold next Thursday, April 30th, from 6-8pm. Come join us for drinks and snacks and to hear more from this increible talent.

ALSO save the date for our next opening reception featuring Vincent Mariani, Roi James and Threshold's own Andrew Anderson on May 9th....more details to come....
